alligator snapping turtle
Macrochelys temminckii
The vulture turtle is one of the largest freshwater turtles in the world. It lives on the bottom of rivers and lakes in North America and hunts using a tongue appendage that resembles a worm.
The vulture turtle differs from other species by its enormous size, heavy shell with sharp ridges, and a special worm-like appendage on the tongue. It plays an important role in water bodies, controlling fish populations and eating carrion.
