The American umbra is a small freshwater fish up to 15 centimeters long. It is capable of breathing atmospheric air, therefore it easily tolerates life in water with very little oxygen.
The American umbra is distinguished by its ability to breathe air using its swim bladder. Thanks to this, it survives in drying swamps and oxygen-poor waters, where other fish die. It serves as food for larger predators and helps control the population of aquatic invertebrates.
Immature form that undergoes metamorphosis before adulthood.
