Bhadwari
Calm, obedient, relatively docile compared to other Indian buffaloes. Adapts well to hand milking and human handling. Moderate aggression, strong maternal instinct.
Compact, medium-sized river-type Asian buffalo breed of dairy-meat direction. Live weight of females 410–520 kg (avg. 450–480 kg), males 520–680 kg (avg. 580–620 kg). Height at withers: females 118–132 cm, males 124–140 cm. Body length 140–165 cm. Build strong, muscular, squat and broad-bodied. Head relatively short and wide with convex forehead, muzzle short square. Horns low-set, directed back-up-inward, forming a “crescent” (length along the curve: females 28–42 cm, males 35–55 cm; distance between bases 18–25 cm). Eyes large convex dark brown to black. Ears of medium length (14–18 cm), horizontally set. Neck short powerful with massive dewlap (in males up to 25–30 cm). Body deep wide barrel-shaped, chest wide (girth 180–205 cm), back straight, rump wide slightly sloping. Tail short (65–85 cm) with dense black brush (18–25 cm). Skin thick coal-black or dark gray. Coat short sparse coarse, with elongated coarse hairs on the withers, shoulders and hips, forming a “mane”. Main color coal-black with metallic/bluish sheen; dark gray (“gunmetal grey”) with black spots is allowed. Characteristic copper-red (brick-red) tint on the inner surface of the ears, around the eyes, lower part of the abdomen and around the udder. Differs from the wild Bubalus arnee by smaller size, strongly curved horns and the presence of copper-red pigment. Format index 1.15–1.22. Not allowed: white markings, absence of copper-red pigment, Murrah-type horns, sagging back.
