Anderson's salamander, or achoque, is an amphibian from Mexico. Adults retain external gills and live their entire lives in the water of one high-mountain lake.
Anderson's salamander differs from related species in that it almost does not transform into a terrestrial form and retains gills throughout its life. It is important for the lake ecosystem because it controls the population of small animals and serves as food for birds.
Immature form that undergoes metamorphosis before adulthood.
