Calm, balanced, not easily frightened, well adapted to pasture keeping in northern conditions. Possesses a strong herd instinct, moderately active, not prone to aggression.
Medium-sized primitive coarse-wool sheep of the Northern European type. Strong constitution, well-developed skeleton, pronounced sexual dimorphism. Height at withers: rams 680–780 mm, ewes 600–700 mm. Body length 700–850 mm. Elongation index 110–118 %. The head comprises approximately 1/4 of the height at the withers. Chest depth 45–48 % of the height at the withers. Distinguished by a fully primitive double fleece (long coarse guard hair + dense soft underwool), strong skeleton, "wild" conformation, absence of skin folds, longer ears, often small horns or horn buds in rams and a "mane" in males. Acceptable colors: white (predominant), black, brown, gray, piebald. Not acceptable: bright red, Dutch spotted, lack of guard-hair luster, soft Merino-like wool, absence of underwool.
