The Atitlan grebe is a large aquatic bird that lived only in Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. It could not fly and completely went extinct in the 1980s due to changes in the lake.
The Atitlan grebe differed from related species by its larger size and complete lack of flight. It occupied an important place in the lake's food chain as a predator. The species disappeared after humans changed the water level in the lake and introduced new animals there.
