wake island rail
Gallirallus wakensis
The Wake Island rail was a small flightless bird that lived only on Wake Atoll in the Pacific Ocean. Unfortunately, the species became completely extinct shortly after World War II.
The Wake Island rail differed from related species by the complete absence of the ability to fly. This happened because there were no terrestrial predators on the small island. The bird played an important role in the atoll's nature, eating insects and helping to disperse plant seeds.
