The spirlin is a small freshwater fish up to 15–18 centimeters long. It lives in rivers with fast currents, has an elongated body and a dark stripe along the sides with rows of dots.
The spirlin differs from the bleak and other small cyprinids by two rows of dark spots along the lateral line and its preference for fast rivers. It serves as an important link in the food chain and indicates the purity of the water in the river.
Immature form that undergoes metamorphosis before adulthood.
