Estaires Duck (Canard d'Estaires)
Calm, friendly, less fearful and noisy compared to other meat duck breeds. Gets along well with other birds, shows moderate activity, not prone to aggression.
Estaires is a compact, light meat-egg breed of ducks of French selection, one of the smallest domestic ducks. Live weight of drake 2.0–2.7 kg (ideal 2.3–2.5 kg), duck 1.8–2.3 kg (ideal 2.0–2.2 kg). Body length 500–620 mm in drakes, 480–580 mm in ducks. Build strong, proportional, with horizontal body carriage. Head small, dry, slightly elongated, without pronounced forehead. Beak of medium width, almost straight, 48–58 mm long, bright orange or orange-yellow. Eyes dark hazel, large, set high. Neck of medium length (140–180 mm), slender, slightly curved. Body deep but not wide, back straight, chest rounded, abdomen tucked up. Wings short, held close. Legs with shank 48–56 mm, bright orange or orange-red, webs well developed, claws almost white. Tail short, slightly raised (15–25°), in drakes 2–4 curled tail feathers 60–85 mm long. Plumage dense, smooth. Main colors: wild (mallard) with green head in drakes, white, blue. Differs from the wild mallard by significantly smaller size, horizontal body carriage, bright orange beak and legs in both sexes, absence of a "forehead".
The duck dips its head into the water and filters food through its beak.
