Banni buffalo
Calm, obedient, highly adaptable to arid conditions. High resistance to heat and diseases. Strong maternal instinct in females. Less aggressive compared to wild relatives.
Banni buffalo — a large, massive, but relatively light breed of river type with a pronounced dairy type. Height at withers in females 1300–1450 mm, in males 1450–1600 mm. Body length 1600–1900 mm. Live weight of females 550–750 kg, of males 700–950 kg. Head relatively light, dry, elongated, with a broad slightly convex forehead and a straight or slightly concave profile. Horns long (450–650 mm in females, up to 750 mm in bulls), thin, flat, sickle-shaped, curved backward and upward, set very wide (distance between bases 350–450 mm) and low. Ears medium-sized (180–240 mm), horizontally set. Eyes large, convex, dark brown or black. Skin thin, soft, shiny. Coat short, smooth, shiny, dominant color — deep black (jet black). Gunmetal black is allowed. Body deep, long, cylindrical. Back straight or with a slight dip. Limbs strong, medium length, hooves black. Tail long (750–950 mm) with a dense black brush (350–450 mm). Differs from Murrah by longer thinner horns, greater height, dry constitution and better adaptation to drought; from Jaffarabadi — by less massiveness and absence of wing-shaped horns.
