Buffle marron
Buffle marron
Wild, cautious, aggressive when defending territory or offspring. High energy level, strong herd instincts, prefers dense forest and swampy shelters. Less social with humans than domesticated buffaloes.
A selectively bred meat line of the domesticated Asian buffalo (Bubalus bubalis), developed in France and Belgium. A large, massive, muscular animal with a compact meat-type conformation. Height at withers: males 1350–1550 mm, females 1250–1400 mm. Body length: males 2600–3100 mm, females 2300–2700 mm. Live weight: males 850–1100 kg (up to 1250 kg), females 550–750 kg. Massiveness index (chest girth / height at withers) ≥ 135; chest depth 55–58 % of height at withers. Head massive, broad, relatively short; forehead broad and convex; muzzle broad, square. Horns short, sickle-shaped (350–550 mm), directed backward and slightly upward. Neck powerful, short, with a pronounced dewlap (up to 400–500 mm deep in bulls). Body deep, broad, barrel-shaped; chest very broad (up to 850 mm). Back straight or slightly raised at the withers, broad and muscular. Abdomen and flanks voluminous, rounded. Limbs strong, medium length; hooves large, broad, black. Tail relatively short (700–950 mm), thick at the base, with a tuft. Coat short (10–40 mm), dense. Dominant color — rich dark brown to chestnut-brown (uniform dark brown, dark chocolate, coffee-brown with a slight golden sheen on the back). Differs from the wild ancestor (Bubalus arnee) by shorter and more massive horns, compact meat-type conformation, short coat without a mane, and stable brown coloration.
