supramonte cave salamander
Speleomantes supramontis
The Supramonte Salamander is a small lungless amphibian that lives only in caves and moist cracks in the Supramonte mountains on the island of Sardinia. It breathes through its skin and never enters the water.
The Supramonte Salamander differs from most amphibians by spending its entire life on land and in caves without an aquatic stage. It is important for nature as part of Sardinia's rare ecosystem and shows how animals can adapt to life in complete darkness.
