The European ass Equus hydruntinus is an extinct species of wild asses from the horse family. It lived in the steppes of Europe and Western Asia until its extinction about a thousand years ago.
The European ass differed from modern asses in the structure of its skull and teeth. It was an important herbivorous animal of the steppes and served as prey for large predators.
