The Peruvian deer, or taruca, is a small hoofed mammal that lives in the high regions of the Andes. Males grow short horns, and thick fur helps endure cold and strong winds.
The taruca differs from the southern huemul by its smaller body size and lighter fur. It is important for the nature of the Andes because it spreads plant seeds and serves as prey for pumas and other predators.
