The Arizona woodpecker is a small bird of the woodpecker family with black-and-white plumage. It lives in the mountain forests of the southwest of North America and forages in the bark of trees.
The Arizona woodpecker differs from related species by a white stripe on the back and a red spot only on the male. It is beneficial for the forest because it destroys harmful insects and leaves hollows for other animals.
Drills bark and wood with its beak, then extracts prey with a long sticky tongue.
