The Japanese tree hare, or Amami rabbit, is a small rare animal that lives only on two islands of Japan. Unlike ordinary hares, it climbs well on trunks and branches of trees and shrubs.
The Japanese tree hare differs from other hares by short ears, short hind legs, and the ability to climb trees. It is considered a living fossil and helps scientists understand how hares evolved. The species is very rare and needs strict protection.
