bermuda night heron
Nyctanassa carcinocatactes
The Bermuda night heron is an extinct nocturnal heron that lived only on the Bermuda Islands. It fed mainly on terrestrial crabs and was larger than related species.
The Bermuda night heron differed from other night herons by a stronger beak and the habit of living in the forest far from water. It controlled the number of crabs and was an important part of the nature of the Bermuda Islands until its extinction after the appearance of humans.
