Nocturnal, cautious and secretive predator. High territoriality, well-developed hunting instinct. In captivity may be aggressive towards unfamiliar people and animals, but tames with early contact. Less social than large civets.
Small Indian Civet (Viverricula indica indica) — a small carnivorous mammal of the family Viverridae. Adult weight: 1800–4000 g. Body length (without tail): 500–650 mm, tail: 300–420 mm, height at withers: 180–250 mm. Build slender, elongated, with relatively short limbs. Head small, wedge-shaped (length 110–140 mm). Ears large, rounded-triangular, erect (height 35–45 mm). Eyes large with vertical pupils and yellow-brown irises. Whiskers very long (up to 70–85 mm). Coat short, coarse, grayish-brown or olive-brown with 4–6 rows of dark spots on the back and sides; belly creamy or grayish-white. Tail long, thin, with 6–9 dark rings and a black tip. Differs from other subspecies by smaller size, more distinct spotted pattern, and light belly. Proportions: body length 1.5–1.7 times tail length. Not allowed: absence of rings on the tail, solid coloration, white “socks” on the paws.
