ascension night heron
Nycticorax olsoni
The Ascension night heron is an extinct medium-sized bird that lived only on Ascension Island in the Atlantic Ocean. It led a nocturnal lifestyle, hardly flew at all, and hunted small animals.
The Ascension night heron differed from other herons by its greatly reduced wings and inability to fly. It was an important part of the island's nature, controlling the population of small animals, but went extinct after the appearance of rats and humans.
