The vaquita is the smallest porpoise in the world. It lives only in the northern part of the Gulf of California off the coast of Mexico.
The vaquita differs from other porpoises by its smallest size and very high dorsal fin. It is on the brink of extinction due to accidental entanglement in fishing nets. Preserving the species is important for the health of the entire Gulf of California ecosystem.
