Cobitis taenia
The common gudgeon is a small freshwater fish up to 12 centimeters long. It lives on the bottom of rivers and lakes with sandy or silty bottoms and uses sharp spines under its eyes for protection from enemies.
The nipper differs from other bottom-dwelling fish with sharp spines under the eyes and the habit of quickly burrowing into the substrate. It helps clean the bottom from detritus and serves as food for predatory fish.
