southern crested newt
Triturus karelinii
2349
Karelin's newt is a large amphibian from the salamander family. It lives in the forests and water bodies of the Caucasus, and males grow a high jagged crest on their back in spring.
Karelin's newt differs from other crested newts in the shape of its crest and white spots on the sides. It regulates the population of small invertebrates and serves as food for birds and grass snakes.
