The belted kingfisher is a medium-sized bird with a long beak and bluish-gray plumage. It lives near rivers and lakes, watches for fish from a branch, and dives headfirst for it.
The belted kingfisher differs from other kingfishers with its blue crest and white breast band. Females have an additional rufous band. It is important for nature because it controls the population of fish and crayfish in water bodies.
