Calm, obedient, less aggressive than the wild water buffalo. Well adapted to working with humans, herd-oriented, patient when used in agriculture.
Romanian buffalo is a large, massive, but relatively compact animal of the dairy-meat type. Live weight of cows 450–650 kg (average 520–580 kg), bulls 650–850 kg (average 720–780 kg). Height at withers: cows 1250–1400 mm, bulls 1350–1550 mm. Body length 1600–1950 mm. Stretch index 135–142 %. Head relatively large (length 480–560 mm), profile straight or slightly concave, forehead wide and convex. Horns long (380–680 mm along the outer curve), sickle-curved backward with a lyre-shaped bend, distance between tips 900–1400 mm, color from light gray to black. Ears drooping, length 180–240 mm. Eyes large dark brown. Nose black, nostrils large. Neck short and powerful (450–580 mm) with dewlap. Body deep and barrel-shaped, back straight, abdomen voluminous. Limbs strong, hooves black and wide. Tail 780–1050 mm with black brush. Coat very short and sparse, dominant color coal-black. Skin thick black or dark gray. More compact and with thinner, longer sickle-shaped horns compared to the wild Bubalus arnee and Asian breeds.
