Camelus dromedarius
Calm, hardy, stubborn under overload or discomfort. High sociality in the herd, strong protective instinct toward territory and offspring. Less aggressive than the two-humped camel, but may spit and bite when strongly irritated.
Classic North African-Arabian dromedary (Arabian camel). Large, long-legged animal with a single large fatty hump of pyramidal or conical shape. Height at withers 1700–2100 mm, body length 2300–3400 mm. Male weight 450–690 kg (up to 800 kg), females 300–540 kg. Head small, wedge-shaped, elongated (380–480 mm). Neck very long (900–1300 mm), S-shaped. Legs long and slender. Coat short (6–15 mm) on the body, longer on the neck, hump, shoulders and thighs. Acceptable colors: majahim (dark brown), magatir (cream/beige), shami (light brown), safr (golden-red), hamr (reddish-brown). Differs from the Bactrian camel by having one hump, taller slender legs, light bone structure, short coat and elongated muzzle. Unofficial standard: body length 1.6–1.8 times the height at withers, hump over the 3rd–5th lumbar vertebrae, neck 35–38 % of height at withers. Not allowed: sagging hump, two humps, short straight neck, white markings.
