scania goose
Сканская гусь (Skånegås)
Calm, confident, moderately active. Well-expressed instinct for protecting territory and offspring. Less timid and more contactable with humans than the wild gray goose. Gets along well in a flock, but may show aggression towards strangers during nesting.
Scania Goose (Skånegås / Oie de Scanie) — a large, massive meat-bred line of the gray goose. Significantly larger than its wild ancestor (ganders weigh 9–12 kg, geese 7–9.5 kg versus 3.5–5.5 kg in the wild). The dominant plumage is pure white instead of gray-brown. The head is large, broad, and massive. The beak is short, very thick, high at the base, with a strongly convex upper mandible, bright orange. The neck is of medium length, very thick, muscular, with a characteristic “hump” in the upper third. The body is deep, broad, barrel-shaped, with a wide rounded breast and two pronounced abdominal folds in adults. The back is broad and level. The body carriage is horizontal or slightly elevated. The wings are long and powerful. The feet are large and bright orange. The plumage is dense, thick, predominantly white; a slight gray “wild overlay” on the back, shoulders, and wing coverts is allowed. It differs from the Emden by a more massive head, a short thick beak, and a “hump” on the neck; from the Toulouse by the absence of a dewlap and lighter beak/feet. Swedish standard: body length is 2.8–3.2 times the height at the withers, breast width 38–42 % of body length.
