bristle-thighed curlew
Numenius tahitiensis
The Tahitian curlew is a large migratory bird with a very long curved bill. It spends summer in the Alaskan tundra, where it raises its chicks, and winter on the warm islands of the Pacific Ocean.
The Tahitian curlew differs from other curlews with stiff bristle-like feathers on its thighs and one of the longest migrations among birds. It is important for nature as a seed disperser on islands and as an indicator of the health of Arctic and oceanic ecosystems.
