flaming poison frog
Oophaga pumilio
327
The small poison dart frog, or strawberry poison frog, is a brightly colored amphibian about two centimeters long. It lives in the tropical forests of Central America, has strong poison in its skin, and shows great care for its offspring.
The Strawberry Poison Dart Frog differs from related species in that the female feeds tadpoles with her own eggs. Its bright coloration and poison protect it from predators. It helps maintain balance in the forest by eating a large number of small insects.
