brook lamprey
Lampetra planeri
The European brook lamprey is a small jawless fish that lives in clean streams and rivers of Europe. It spends most of its life as a larva, which hides in the ground and filters water.
Unlike the sea lamprey, the brook lamprey does not attach to other fish and does not feed on their blood. It serves as an important indicator of water purity in streams and is part of the natural food chain.
