pallas's cormorant
Phalacrocorax perspicillatus
Steller's cormorant was the largest marine bird among cormorants. It lived only near the Commander Islands in the Bering Sea and became completely extinct by 1850 due to human hunting.
The Steller's cormorant was distinguished by its large body size and white rings around the eyes. It was an important fish hunter in cold seas. The species disappeared because people easily hunted these large and unwary birds for food.
