The painted francolin is a small bird about 15 centimeters long. Males in spring and summer have bright coloration: black face, white eyebrows and cheeks, chestnut nape.
The painted plantain differs from other similar birds by the very bright head of males in spring. It helps the tundra nature by eating many insects and serves as food for predators.
