ukrainian brook lamprey
Eudontomyzon mariae
The Ukrainian lamprey is a small freshwater fish without jaws. It lives in rivers of Eastern Europe, spends most of its life as a larva in bottom silt, and does not attack other fish.
The Ukrainian lamprey differs from marine lampreys in that it does not parasitize fish and does not feed in adulthood. Its larvae clean river water from organic remains and serve as an important part of river ecosystems.
