The Mascarene coot was a large bird from the rail family that could not fly at all. It lived only on the islands of Mauritius and Réunion in the Indian Ocean and went extinct more than three hundred years ago due to hunting and introduced animals.
The Mascarene coot differed from ordinary coots in its strongly reduced wings and larger body. It shows how quickly birds change on islands without predators. The species completely disappeared due to humans, but helps scientists understand how important it is to protect island animals.
