carpathian newt
Lissotriton montandoni
The Carpathian newt is a small amphibian up to 13 centimeters long. It lives in the mountain forests of the Carpathians, spends winter and summer on land, and returns to water in spring for breeding.
The Carpathian newt differs from the closely related common newt by the absence of a dark stripe through the eye and a higher tail crest in males. It plays an important role in forest ecosystems, feeding on harmful insects and serving as food for birds and snakes.
