- The ferret is an active, playful, and curious animal that constantly runs around the apartment, trying to attract attention.
- It can squeeze through very narrow gaps thanks to its flexible body.
- Ferrets have an excellent sense of smell and are used to hunt rabbits.
- They produce many sounds — from “dooking” to hissing.
- Ferrets sleep up to 18 hours a day.
- In captivity they have lived to 8–10 years.
- The ferret is a domesticated form of the European polecat that has been bred for more than 2000 years.
- Ferrets can be trained to walk on a leash.
- Litters usually contain 5–10 young.
- They undergo seasonal moulting.
年齢
The species typically lives for six to ten years, with a maximum lifespan of fourteen years, and a theoretical lifespan ranging from five years seven months to eleven years one month. Ferrets reach sexual maturity between eight months and one year; their eyes open between three weeks and one month and one week, and they begin walking at one month and one week old. The embryo develops inside the mother after fertilization, followed by the newborn stage, where the young are born blind, deaf, and with little fur, consuming only maternal milk. Subsequently, the species enters the adult stage, lasting from one to nine years, during which the animal fully grows and can reproduce.
表現型
The young ferret receives nourishment from the mother via the placenta. The eyes are closed and open only during the fourth or fifth week; the skin is pink and thin during the first days, and fur begins to grow within a week. The species has dense, short fur with coloration varying from light to dark brown with black markings. The body is long, slender, and very flexible, aiding in navigating narrow burrows and shelters. It possesses strong, sharp claws on all paws, used for digging and seizing prey. A long, bushy tail assists in maintaining balance. The adult has sharp teeth that help kill and eat prey.
生理学
The ferret’s body height ranges from 1.7 to 3.25 meters, and its body length varies from 32 to 50 centimeters; the species' mass is between 0.6 and 2 kilograms. During the embryo stage, the body mass is 0 grams, while in the young stage, the body mass ranges from 6 to 250 grams and the body length is from 8 to 15 centimeters. The adult ferret has a body mass of 0.8 to 2 kilograms and a body length of 38 to 50 centimeters.
生息地
The species inhabits temperate mixed forests with warm summers and many oak, birch, and maple trees, as well as flooded meadows where water frequently covers the ground and there is abundant grass; it also lives in taiga forests characterized by cold winters and numerous coniferous trees such as spruce and pine, and tundra regions with very cold temperatures and short summers, where trees are almost absent and there is much moss. Ferrets occupy terrestrial landscapes including forest floors and woodlands. The climate varies, encompassing cool summers of +15 to +20 degrees Celsius, consistently wet conditions with frequent rain and high humidity, warm summers with abundant rainfall, warm winters that are not very cold, and pleasant summers of +20 to +25 degrees Celsius.
隠れ家
The ferret lives in underground burrows or in cages and enclosures; the species uses dens for reproduction, rest, and protection from the sun. The den is constructed from paper, fabric, and hay.
地理
The ferret is found within the Palearctic biogeographical region and inhabits Celtic broadleaf forests, Baltic mixed forests, and European Atlantic mixed forests ecosystems.
餌
The ferret is a strict predator and consumes only meat, including rodents, rabbits, and birds in the wild. Its diet consists of rodents, rabbits, birds, eggs, insects, hares, and rabbits. The species obtains food through active hunting and pursuit of small prey. Daily food intake ranges from 50 grams to 150 grams. The ferret’s prey includes mice, hamsters, lagomorphs, rodents, bats, and mammals. At home, the species is given raw meat or special feed.
繁殖
The species inhabits and develops on land, away from bodies of water, and their young develop in nests built on or near the ground, sometimes directly on the surface of the soil. Reproduction occurs in spring, and the female gives birth to litters of 3 to 8 ferrets after a gestation period of 42 days. The young are born live on land and are fed milk and protected by the mother in the nest. Nests can be located directly on the ground surface or concealed within an underground burrow. Only the mother displays parental care for the offspring. The species reaches maturity from 8 months to 1 year, and reproduction involves a homogamic process with fertilization occurring without generation change. The interval between reproductions is 1 year, and litters consist of 3 to 8 young.
