- If the bird cannot escape a predator, it hides on the ground, pressing itself against it with its entire body and spreading its wings to blend into the surroundings.
- When sensing danger from predators on the ground, the common hoopoe releases along with its feces a sticky liquid with a very unpleasant odor, thus scaring off the hunters.
- An adult hoopoe caught in captivity becomes accustomed to humans and does not fly away from them. The best results are achieved with already feathered chicks.
- Hoopoe chicks hatch naked and weak, but grow quickly because their parents bring them calorie-rich food up to 45 times per hour.
年齢
Eurasian hoopoes experience several developmental stages, beginning with the “embryo” stage when development occurs inside an egg. The “nestling” stage follows, during which the young are fed insects by their parents and lasts from one to four weeks. Subsequently, the species enters the “rapid growth post-fledgling” stage, a period of learning to fly and forage for food that can extend from four weeks and one day up to one year. The “adult” stage, when the bird is capable of reproduction, begins after this and lasts from one to nine years. The age of sexual maturity for Eurasian hoopoes ranges from nine months and one week to one year and three months. A typical lifespan for the species is from eight years and four months to thirteen years and eleven months, although the maximum recorded lifespan is eleven years and one month, with a theoretical lifespan ranging from seven years and ten months to eleven years and two months.
表現型
The young Eurasian hoopoe is covered in down, with stripes appearing on its feathers later; after a period of rapid growth, the young have a crest that is smaller than that of adults. An adult Eurasian hoopoe possesses a long, thin beak that curves slightly downwards for foraging in soil, and has a large crest of feathers on its head which rises when agitated or during courtship. The species also has a tail with a black-and-white pattern, aiding in flight control, and wings with bright black-and-white stripes which are clearly visible in flight.
生理学
Eurasian hoopoes measure between 25 and 32 centimeters in body length, with a wingspan of 44 centimeters, and weigh from 65.2 to 75.2 grams; the species exhibits developmental stages characterized by varying physical dimensions and weights, with the "embryo" stage having a body length of from 2.6 to 2.8 centimeters and a body mass of from 4.5 to 5.5 grams, while the "nestling" stage shows a body length of from 8 to 22 centimeters and a body mass of from 5 to 65 grams; during the "rapid growth young" stage, the body length is from 22 to 28 centimeters and the body mass is from 55 to 75 grams, and adult hoopoes possess a body length of from 25 to 32 centimeters and a body mass of from 46 to 89 grams.
生息地
Eurasian hoopoes inhabit land and woodland environments, including temperate mixed forests with warm summers and many oak, birch, and maple trees, flooded meadows where water frequently covers the ground and there is abundant grass, and Mediterranean forests characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. The species occupies areas with varied climates, such as very dry regions that are almost desert-like, locations with nearly rainless summers and increased precipitation in winter, and areas experiencing very hot summers exceeding 25 to 30 degrees Celsius. They also live in steppes with plentiful grass and few trees where rainfall is infrequent, as well as environments that are consistently wet with frequent rain. Eurasian hoopoes can be found at altitudes up to 2.5 kilometers.
隠れ家
Eurasian hoopoes inhabit tree cavities, cracks in rocks, burrows, or walls of buildings; the species constructs or utilizes a nest for laying eggs and raising young. The nest is a structure made of dry grass and feathers.
地理
Eurasian hoopoes inhabit the Afrotropical realm and the Palearctic realm. The species is found in Celtic broadleaf forests, broadleaf forests of Western Europe, coniferous forests of the Qilian Mountains, Baltic mixed forests, European Atlantic mixed forests, and mixed forests of the Pindus Mountains.
餌
The Eurasian hoopoe feeds on insects and other small invertebrates, employing a foraging strategy of searching for and capturing food; it obtains nourishment through probing the soil with its long beak. The species’ diet includes beetles, caterpillars, spiders, worms, ants, and other invertebrates such as butterflies, diptera (true flies), hymenoptera (ants, bees, wasps), bedbugs, orthoptera (grasshoppers, crickets), dragonflies, mayflies, and net-winged insects. When searching for food, the Eurasian hoopoes inserts its long beak into the soil or manure and opens it to seize prey. The daily food requirement ranges from 25 grams to 60 grams.
繁殖
The Eurasian hoopoe’s embryo develops for 1 week and 5 days, and the female lays from 4 to 9 eggs in a cavity. Incubation lasts from 15 to 18 days, after which both parents feed the young until they leave the nest. A clutch has from 4 to 9 chicks, and the species reproduces once every year. The young reach maturity from 11 months to 1 year and 1 month.
