マミジロキクイタダキ
- The common firecrest is one of the smallest birds in Europe, measuring no more than 9 cm in length and weighing 4–7 g. Along with its close relative, the golden-headed kinglet, it has the same plumage coloration.
- The common firecrest has a flat sole, whereas the golden-headed kinglet has grooves that allow it to grasp single needles. The golden-headed kinglet’s well-developed hind toe enables it to move along vertical trunks and even hang upside down.
- The digestive system of the common firecrest is adapted only to an insectivorous diet. In closely related species, such as the tit, the body can digest plant-based food.
- The common firecrest feeds almost exclusively on small arthropods with soft exoskeletons. It catches springtails, aphids, and spiders, including hanging in the air and pulling prey from webs.
- The common firecrest can live in urban parks and large gardens, just as in the wild. The density of its populations in cultural landscapes is comparable to the density in the most favorable natural conditions.
- The Argentine ant displaces local ants, reducing the food base for the common firecrest. This forces the bird to spend more time searching for food.
- The common firecrest’s mating song consists of 11–14 segments, each of which is louder and faster than the previous one. The song lasts from 0.5 to 2.5 seconds and is repeated up to 8 times per minute.
- The common firecrest has wide white eyebrows, which the golden-headed kinglet lacks. Above the eyebrows is a black stripe—thicker than that of the golden-headed kinglet.
- In winter, the common firecrest surveys its territory three times faster than the yellow-billed firecrest, ignoring small arthropods. Yellow-billed firecrests do not miss such prey.
年齢
The common firecrest’s typical lifespan ranges from 5 years and 3 months to 8 years and 9 months, although the maximum recorded lifespan is 7 years, and the theoretical lifespan is from 5 years to 6 years and 5 months; the species reaches sexual maturity between 2 months and 1 year and 1 month. Development begins with the embryo stage, where the developing offspring resides within an egg, followed by the nestling stage, during which the young are fed by their parents. Subsequently, the rapid-growth juvenile stage lasts from 2 weeks and 6 days to 1 year, as the young bird learns to fly and forage for food. The adult stage, characterized by reproductive capability, spans from 1 to 7 years.
表現型
The young firecrest has downy feathers covering its body, with eyes closed during the first days; after rapid growth, the plumage is duller than that of adults, and the crest is small and pale. An adult goldcrest possesses a short and thin beak suitable for catching small insects, and large dark eyes with a white brow above them. The species exhibits a brightly orange crest edged with black, which rises when it is agitated. Its plumage is olive-green on the back, light on the belly, and features two white stripes on the wings.
生理学
The common firecrest is a small bird with a body length ranging from 8.5 to 9.5 centimeters and a wingspan of 14 centimeters; its mass varies from 7.99 to 10 grams. The embryo stage has a body mass between 0.4 and 0.6 grams, while the nestling stage exhibits a body mass ranging from 0.8 to 4.5 grams and a body length of 4 to 6 centimeters. Following rapid growth, the young bird’s body mass is between 4.5 and 6 grams, with a body length of 8 to 9 centimeters. The adult firecrest has a body mass from 5 to 7 grams and a body length from 8.5 to 9.5 centimeters.
生息地
Common firecrests inhabit land and forest environments, specifically at elevations up to 1.8 kilometers. The species occupies temperate mixed forests with warm summers and many oaks, birches, and maples, as well as flooded meadows where water frequently covers the ground and there is abundant grass. The climate is consistently very wet with frequent rain and high humidity; summers are cool with significant rainfall and snow in winter, or summers are warm and pleasant with abundant rain, or summers are simply warm and winters are not very cold.
隠れ家
Common firecrests are found on the branches of coniferous or deciduous trees, often high up; the species builds or uses nests for laying eggs and raising young; these nests are constructed from lichens, cobwebs, moss, and feathers.
地理
The common firecrest is found within the Palearctic biogeographical region and occupies several distinct ecosystems, including Celtic broadleaf forests, broadleaf forests of Western Europe, coniferous forests of the Qilian Mountains, Balkan mixed forests, Baltic mixed forests, and coniferous and mixed forests of the Pyrenees.
餌
The common firecrest feeds on small insects and spiders, quickly inspecting branches and leaves to find prey, obtaining food from plants; its diet includes small insects, spiders, insect larvae, an insect, and plant matter, with a feeding strategy focused on searching for and acquiring food. The species’ prey consists of butterflies, flies, Hymenoptera, beetles, bugs, Orthoptera, dragonflies, stoneflies, and lacewings. Daily food consumption ranges from 1.5 grams to 3 grams.
繁殖
The female firecrest builds a nest and incubates the eggs, while the male guards the territory and assists in feeding the young; embryonic development takes 1 week and 2 days. A clutch contains from 7 to 11 eggs, and the species has one or two clutches per season. The female raises from 7 to 11 young per brood. Maturity is reached from 10 months to 1 year and 1 month. The reproductive interval is from 1 year to 1 year and 1 month.
