ウンピョウ
- The clouded leopard has the largest teeth relative to body size of all big cats, which can reach up to 3.5 cm.
- The leopard can open its jaws almost 100 degrees.
- In clouded leopards, mating is successful in less than 20% of cases, and conception and offspring rearing occur even less frequently. This is due to male aggression in captivity after mating.
- It can descend trees head-first thanks to rotating ankles.
- Nothing is known about the reproduction of the clouded leopard in the wild, but in captivity it occurs from March to August.
- Researchers in the United Kingdom believe that the main hope for successful breeding of clouded leopards in captivity will be linked to artificial insemination and embryo transfers to produce healthy offspring.
- In captivity it has lived more than 15 years.
- The tail is almost as long as the body and serves as a counterbalance.
- The leopard can hang from its hind legs.
- Cubs are born blind.
年齢
The clouded leopard’s lifespan typically ranges from 11 to 15 years, with a maximum recorded lifespan of 19 years and 10 months; the theoretical lifespan falls between 9 years and 11 months and 19 years and 10 months. The species reaches sexual maturity between 2 and 3 years of age. During the embryonic stage, the offspring develops within the mother and receives all necessary nutrients from her. The cub is born blind and helpless, entering the infant stage where it lives in a shelter, drinks its mother’s milk, and gradually learns to walk, beginning between 2 weeks and 4 days and 4 weeks of age. The eyes open between 1 and 2 weeks. The adult stage lasts from 2 to 17 years, during which the animal is capable of climbing trees, hunting, and living independently.
表現型
The cub has soft fur with spots, which are initially blurred but gradually become clear; its eyes open approximately ten days after birth. The species possesses flexible ankles that allow the hind paws to rotate 180 degrees, enabling it to descend from trees headfirst. An adult clouded leopard has long, sharp canines, allowing it to quickly kill prey with a bite to the neck. The adult’s fur pattern consists of large dark spots shaped like clouds and stripes on the tail, which aids in camouflage within forests. It also has a very long and fluffy tail that helps maintain balance when walking along thin branches.
生理学
The clouded leopard’s body length ranges from 70 centimeters to 1.1 meters, and its mass varies from 17.51 to 18.24 kilograms; during the embryonic stage, the body mass is between 1 and 20 grams; the young have a body mass ranging from 150 grams to 7 kilograms and a body length of 15 to 70 centimeters; adult individuals weigh from 16 to 23 kilograms and measure from 80 centimeters to 1.1 meters in body length.
生息地
The clouded leopard inhabits terrestrial forest landscapes at elevations up to 3 kilometers. The species occupies tropical dry forests, characterized by heat and a dry season with deciduous trees, and tropical moist forests, which are consistently hot and humid with large trees and vines. The climate varies; winters have little precipitation while summers experience more rain, and the climate can be hot with minimal winter rainfall, or consistently hot and wet with nearly daily rain. Summers are very hot, exceeding 25 to 30 degrees Celsius. The species lives in areas with a consistently hot climate, frequent rains but occasional dry periods.
隠れ家
The clouded leopard is found in trees. The species does not have a permanent or long-term shelter. It lacks a fixed den site. The purpose of any temporary shelter includes resting and protection from the sun.
地理
Clouded leopards inhabit the Indomalaya, Australasia, and Palearctic biogeographical realms. The species occupies lowland moist deciduous forests of the Chao Phraya basin, southwestern Ghat mountain rainforests, western Java rainforests, and peat swamp forests of Tonle Sap–Mekong.
餌
The clouded leopard is a predator that hunts monkeys, small deer, birds, rodents, and sometimes wild boars, often ambushing prey from trees or on the ground; its feeding strategy involves active hunting and stalking. The species’ diet includes porcupines, pallas's squirrels, wild boars, sika deer, long-tailed macaques, grey langurs, and stump-tailed monkeys. Young clouded leopards consume milk, while adults require a daily food intake ranging from 0.8 kilograms to 2 kilograms. In some cultures, the animal is eaten, but it is not considered halal or kosher.
繁殖
The clouded leopard reproduces through sexual reproduction involving a male and a female that meet only for mating. Gestation lasts approximately three months, after which the female gives birth to a litter of one to five cubs. The young are born live on land and are cared for by the mother until they learn to hunt. A female can have two to five offspring. The species inhabits and develops on land, outside of bodies of water. The male and female reach maturity from 1 year and 10 months to 2 years and 6 months. The interval between litters is one to two years.
