나이
The African warthog’s typical lifespan ranges from 22 years and 6 months to 37 years and 6 months, with a maximum recorded lifespan of 30 years, although the theoretical lifespan is between 10 years and 6 months and 20 years and 11 months. The species reaches sexual maturity at an age ranging from 1 year and 2 months to 2 years; newborn young have their eyes open and begin walking immediately. The embryo develops inside the mother for approximately 170 days without independent feeding, and the subsequent infant stage lasts from 1 day to 4 months, during which the young lives in a burrow, drinks its mother’s milk, and has stripes on its body. Following this, the animal enters the adult stage, lasting from 2 years to 15 years and 1 month, during which it can reproduce, actively searches for food, and runs quickly when threatened.
표현형
The African warthog has light stripes on its back and sides for camouflage from predators; the young also display this feature. An adult of the species possesses a stiff mane of bristles along the neck and back. The animal's tail is thin with a tuft at the end, rising vertically when it runs. The boar has long tusks, with the upper tusks curved outwards, used for digging and defense. Four large skin growths protect the face from blows during fights.
생리학
The species has a body height ranging from 17.8 centimeters to 4.5 meters and a body length from 85 centimeters to 1.5 meters; its mass is 100 kilograms. The embryo stage exhibits a body mass between 50 grams and 0.7 kilograms, while the young have a body mass ranging from 0.8 to 12 kilograms and a body length from 40 to 65 centimeters. Adult African warthogs display a body mass from 60 to 150 kilograms and a body length from 0.95 to 1.5 meters.
서식지
The African wart hog occupies habitats up to 2.5 kilometers above sea level and is found in temperate steppes with abundant grass and few trees, as well as tropical savannas that are hot with uneven rainfall and many trees. The species inhabits terrestrial landscapes including grasslands, steppes, and grassy areas. The climate varies, encompassing hot steppes with very hot, dry summers and abundant grass, extremely arid regions with rare rainfall, winters with little precipitation and more rain in summer, hot conditions with summer rains and sparse winter precipitation, and consistently hot conditions throughout the year with frequent rainfall but occasional dryness.
은신처
The aardvark inhabits open areas of the savanna and uses a burrow as shelter. The species utilizes an excavated underground tunnel or chamber for breeding, resting, and protection from the sun. For constructing its shelter, the aardvark employs roots and grass.
지리
The African wart hog occupies the biogeographical region of Afrotropics and is found in several ecosystems, including Southern scrublands and Acacia-Commiphora thickets, the West Congo forest-savanna, the Limpopo Lowveld, the West Sudanese savanna, the xerophytic savanna of the Kalahari, and the Acacia forests of the Kalahari.
먹이
The African wart hog primarily feeds on grass and roots, digging them up with its tusks and snout, and sometimes consumes fruits, insects, or carrion; the species employs grazing and digging strategies to obtain food, searching for and acquiring nourishment. Its diet includes grass, roots, bulbs, fruits, insects, and carrion, with a daily food requirement ranging from 2 kilograms to 5 kilograms. The species forages for stream insects, beetles, butterflies, diptera, hymenoptera, bedbugs, orthoptera, dragonflies, and net-winged insects. Although the animal is eaten in some cultures, it is not considered halal, kosher, or permissible within Ethiopian and Coptic traditions.
번식
Embryonic development is 5 months 2 weeks. Litter size is 2–4. Maturity occurs from 1 year 6 months to 3 years. Offspring are 2–4—the female gives birth to live young in a burrow. Usually two to four piglets are born. The mother protects and feeds them with milk for several months. The breeding interval is from 1 year to 1 year 6 months. Habitat—they inhabit and develop on land, outside of water bodies. In a terrestrial nest—eggs, larvae or offspring develop in a nest built on the ground or close to it. Ground nest—the nest is located directly on the surface of the soil on land. Caring father—the nest is located directly on the surface of the soil on land, only the father shows parental care for the offspring. In a burrow—the nest is hidden in an underground burrow. Caring mother—the nest is hidden in an underground burrow, only the mother shows parental care for the offspring. Viviparity—the young are born live on land, they do not hatch from eggs or larvae. Usual sexual—homogamy, reproduction always with fertilization, without a change of generations.
