Calm, peaceful, pronounced decorative and display instincts. Many lines show increased vocalization (cooing), tendency to posing and spreading plumage. Less pronounced flight instinct compared to homing and sporting pigeons. They get along well in groups, but may show territoriality during the mating period.
Decorative pigeons — a collective group of breeds of the domestic pigeon (Columba livia f. domestica), bred exclusively for exterior features. Vary greatly in size: weight 180–1400 g (typically 300–650 g), body length 180–450 mm (typically 260–340 mm). Differ from the wild rock pigeon by extremely diverse head morphology (apple-shaped, snake-headed, wide flat), length and shape of beak (8–42 mm), development of cere, shape and set of neck, chest width, feather structure (smooth, curly/frill, silky), presence of crest, mantle, rosette or feathered legs. Tail from 12 to 30–42 feathers, often vertically spread (Fantail). Eyes with iris of pearl, bull, orange, red or silver color (diameter 8–12 mm). Colors almost all possible: solid, piebald, magpie, owl, with belts, masks and others. Standards of individual breeds (Jacobin, Fantail, Modena, English Carrier, Lahore and others) strict in proportions, angles of set, eye color and cere. Disqualifying defects: weak development of breed characteristics, “wild” blue color with belts, asymmetry of crest, incorrect set of wings/tail.
