食蚁狸
- The eastern falanouc accumulates up to 800 grams of fat in its tail in autumn. Active individuals were observed during winter, despite the assumption that they hibernate.
- The falanouc is an unusual Malagasy carnivore with very small teeth and a long narrow snout.
- The eastern falanouc has large legs, and its large toes are positioned low on the feet. Its claws are relatively long and do not retract, or retract only partially.
- The teeth are strongly reduced compared with other carnivores.
- The animal is nocturnal or crepuscular in the humid forests of eastern Madagascar.
- It specialises in feeding on earthworms and insects that it finds in the leaf litter.
- The female gives birth to a single young.

- Status is Vulnerable because of habitat loss.
年龄
The Malagasy mongoose experiences several distinct developmental stages beginning with the embryonic stage, during which the embryo develops inside the mother's body; at birth, the young are small and blind, and their eyes open immediately. The infant stage lasts from one day to three months, during which the mother feeds them milk and protects them. The species reaches sexual maturity between one year and six months and two years and seven months of age. The adult stage begins after this period and lasts from one year to thirteen years and eight months. A typical lifespan for the species ranges from nineteen years and six months to thirty-two years and six months, although the maximum recorded lifespan is twelve years.

生理学
The eastern falanouc, also known as a Malagasy mongoose or fanaloka, has a body length ranging from 40 to 55 centimeters and a mass from 493 grams to 1.3 kilograms; the adult stage of the species measures from 45 to 55 centimeters in body length and weighs from 2.5 to 4 kilograms. The young fanalokas have a body length from 12 to 18 centimeters, with a mass from 60 to 120 grams.
栖息地
The Malagasy mongoose lives in tropical moist forests, terrestrial habitats, and forested landscapes, at elevations up to 1.6 kilometers. The species inhabits areas with a climate that is always hot and wet, experiencing very high temperatures and humidity throughout the year with rain almost every day; it also occupies regions where winters have little precipitation and summers bring more rain, or where it is very hot all year. The climate can also be very hot with frequent rains, although sometimes dry; or it can be very wet with rain occurring almost constantly and a high degree of humidity.
庇护所
The Malagasy mongoose inhabits dense, humid forests on land and utilizes dens for protection, breeding, and rest.
地理
The Malagasy mongoose is found within the biogeographical realms of Afrotropics and Neotropics, inhabiting ecosystems such as Eastern Arc forests, Eastern African mountain forests, and coastal forests and woodlands of southern Swahili. Falanoucs specifically occupy Eastern Arc forests, mountainous forests of Eastern Africa, and coastal forests and woodlands in the southern Swahili region. The species’ distribution is limited to these particular habitats.
食性
The Malagasy mongoose primarily consumes insects, centipedes, frogs, lizards, and small mammals, occasionally catching fish or eating fruit; the species gathers and hunts prey both on land and in water using an active hunting strategy. Its diet includes beetles, butterflies, flies, Hymenoptera, bedbugs, Orthoptera, dragonflies, stoneflies, and lacewings. The daily food requirement ranges from 60 grams to 120 grams.
繁殖
Falanoucs inhabit and develop on land, away from bodies of water, and give birth to live young that are well-developed; the female has a litter size of 1 to 3 offspring after a gestation period of approximately three months. The species reproduces through sexual reproduction, always involving fertilization and without generational changes. The male and female reach maturity at an age of 1 to 2 years, and the interval between successive litters is 1 year. A litter consists of 1 to 3 young, and the female gives birth to that number of offspring.
