年龄
Jaguarundis typically live from fourteen years to twenty-three years and three months, with a maximum lifespan of eighteen years and seven months; the theoretical lifespan ranges from nine years and four months to eighteen years and seven months. The species reaches sexual maturity between two and three years of age, and the young’s eyes open between one and two weeks after birth. The young begin to walk between two weeks and four days and four weeks of age. The embryo stage involves development within the mother. The kitten stage lasts from one day to one year, during which the young live with the mother, are fed milk, and learn to hunt. The adult stage lasts from one year and one month to seventeen years and ten months, marking a period when the animal hunts and can reproduce.
表型
The jaguarundi has soft, short fur that is gray or reddish in color without spots in its young; adult jaguarundis possess short, smooth fur without spots, and their coat color is either gray or reddish-brown. The species’ body is long and flexible, aiding movement through dense thickets, and the head is small and flat with short, rounded ears and yellow eyes. Short legs with sharp claws enable hunting and climbing, while a long tail helps maintain balance during movement.
生理学
Jaguarundis measure from 22.9 to 33 centimeters in height, and from 1.1 to 1.5 meters in length; their mass ranges from 6.74 to 7.05 kilograms. The embryo stage has a body mass from 1 to 80 grams and a body length from 1 millimeter to 12 centimeters. During the juvenile stage, jaguarundis weigh from 150 grams to 2.2 kilograms and measure from 30 centimeters to 0.9 meters in length. Adult jaguarundis have a body mass from 3.5 to 7 kilograms and a body length from 1.1 to 1.5 meters.
栖息地
Jaguarundis inhabit tropical dry forests with hot temperatures and a dry season, tropical moist forests that are consistently hot and humid with large trees and vines, flooded meadows where water frequently covers the ground and there is abundant grass, and tropical savannas that are hot with uneven rainfall and many trees and grasses. The species occupies terrestrial forests, grasslands, steppes, herbages, and scrublands at elevations up to 2 kilometers. The climate varies, with little precipitation in winter and more in summer, or consistently hot temperatures with frequent rains but occasional dry periods, or very hot and humid conditions year-round with nearly daily rainfall, or hot temperatures with heavy summer rains and little winter precipitation, or simply very hot weather throughout the year with frequent rains but sometimes dryness.
庇护所
The jaguarundi inhabits forests or forest edges and does not have a permanent or long-term shelter. The species does not utilize a fixed den site for purposes such as breeding, resting, or protection from the sun. It lacks a consistent refuge.
地理
The jaguarundi is found within the Neotropical realm, inhabiting Bolivian yungas, caatinga, dry forests of Central America, dry forests of the Chiapas basin, dry forests of Cuba, and dry forests of southern Pacific areas; the species occupies diverse ecosystems including these habitats.
食性
The jaguarundi is a predator that hunts small animals on the ground and in bushes, employing active hunting and ambush strategies to obtain food; the species actively hunts during the day and twilight hours, consuming rodents, birds, lizards, frogs, fish, toads, and catfish. The young consume milk, while adults require between 150 grams and 300 grams of food daily. The jaguarundi’s prey includes iguanas, chachalacas, cotton hamsters, ameivas, and American rabbits. It is noted that in some cultures the animal is eaten, but it is not considered halal or kosher.
繁殖
Jaguarundis inhabit and develop on land, away from bodies of water, and their young develop in a nest built on or near the ground. Embryonic development takes 2 months and 2 weeks, and the species reproduces through live birth, with the young being born alive on land rather than hatching from eggs or larvae. A female gives birth to 1–4 offspring after a gestation period of 63–75 days, and she feeds and protects the young for several months. The size of a litter is 1–4, and the female may have up to 4 litters. Parental care is provided only by the mother, who builds a nest directly on the surface of the ground. The interval between reproduction periods ranges from 6 months to 1 year and 1 month. Sexual reproduction always occurs through fertilization with no alternation of generations. The species reaches maturity from 2 to 3 years.
