Eurasian hoopoes inhabit land and woodland environments, including temperate mixed forests with warm summers and many oak, birch, and maple trees, flooded meadows where water frequently covers the ground and there is abundant grass, and Mediterranean forests characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. The species occupies areas with varied climates, such as very dry regions that are almost desert-like, locations with nearly rainless summers and increased precipitation in winter, and areas experiencing very hot summers exceeding 25 to 30 degrees Celsius. They also live in steppes with plentiful grass and few trees where rainfall is infrequent, as well as environments that are consistently wet with frequent rain. Eurasian hoopoes can be found at altitudes up to 2.5 kilometers.
