- The northern raven is considered one of the smartest birds. It is easy to tame, especially when young.
- Northern ravens are well adapted to scattered and sparse food sources and eat almost anything edible that they can catch or find.
- In search of food, the northern raven is capable of soaring in the air for long periods, which distinguishes it from other corvids. This allows it to efficiently cover large areas.
- The northern raven maintains a pair for many years, possibly for life. Attachment to territory and nesting site contributes to the stability of the pair.
- In Russia, the northern raven is absent only on the northernmost peninsulas (Yamal, Taymyr, Gydansky) and on most Arctic islands.
- Northern ravens that are fed and cared for since childhood consider their caretaker their owner. A raven can have only one owner.
- Ecologically, the northern raven is very adaptable, living in a wide variety of landscapes: in forests, deserts, and mountains.
- In one case, biologists observed a raven returning to the same rocky ledge year after year, despite the previous nest being destroyed by predators.
- The northern raven can fly as high as 8000 meters. This allows it to live in mountainous regions where other birds cannot survive.
年龄
Common ravens have a typical lifespan of from 51 years and 10 months to 86 years and 4 months, with a maximum recorded lifespan of 69 years and 1 month, although their theoretical lifespan is from 11 years to 21 years and 11 months. The species reaches sexual maturity from 3 months and 1 week to 4 years of age; the embryo develops inside an egg and does not feed itself. The nestling stage occurs when the young are in the nest, where parents feed them insects and other food, lasting from 1 month and 1 week to 1 month and 2 weeks. Following this is the rapid-growth juvenile stage, during which the young bird learns to fly and find food independently, a period lasting from 6 months to 3 years. The adult stage begins after 3 years and lasts up to 30 years and 2 months, during which the bird can reproduce and occupies its territory.
表型
Young ravens have short, soft beaks and black feathers without a strong sheen; the feathers of juvenile birds after a period of rapid growth are also black, with a gradual appearance of shine. Adult common ravens possess a powerful black beak used for tearing food, building nests, and defense, and strong legs with sharp claws employed for walking on the ground and grasping prey. The plumage of adult birds is black with a strong metallic sheen in sunlight, aiding in heat retention and enabling efficient flight; they also have a wedge-shaped tail that assists with sharp turns in flight, and large, powerful wings allowing for prolonged soaring. The species' feathers are black, and the feet are strong.
生理学
Common ravens measure from 54 to 69 centimeters in body length and weigh from 0.99 to 1.23 kilograms; their wingspan reaches 1.21 meters. The embryo stage has a body mass ranging from 15 to 30 grams. During the nestling stage, the young have a body mass between 30 grams and 0.8 kilograms and measure from 10 to 40 centimeters in length. Following rapid growth, the juveniles weigh from 0.7 to 1.3 kilograms and are from 50 to 65 centimeters long. Adult ravens weigh from 0.9 to 1.6 kilograms and measure from 58 to 69 centimeters in body length.
栖息地
Common ravens inhabit terrestrial landscapes including highlands and tundra, as well as ground forests. The species occupies temperate mixed forests with warm summers and many oak, birch, and maple trees; temperate coniferous forests that are cool and contain many coniferous trees and snow in winter; flooded meadows where water frequently covers the land and there is abundant grass; taiga with cold winters and many spruce and pine trees; and tundra characterized by very cold temperatures, a short summer, sparse vegetation, and abundant moss. They are also found in cold steppes that are dry with cold winters and little tree cover; climates that are cold and nearly dry throughout most of the year; environments that are consistently very wet with almost constant rain; areas experiencing much rainfall and cool summers with snow in winter; and regions with abundant rainfall, warm summers, and snow in winter. Common ravens can be found at elevations up to 4 kilometers.
庇护所
Common ravens are found on cliffs, tall trees, or artificial structures. The species builds or utilizes a nest as a shelter. This nest is a nesting structure used for laying eggs and raising young. Nesting materials include branches, twigs, grass, and wool.
地理
Common ravens are found in the Nearctic and Palearctic biogeographical regions, inhabiting Celtic broadleaf forests, broadleaf forests of Western Europe, coniferous forests of the Qilian Mountains, low-lying forests of the Eastern Great Lakes, Balkan mixed forests, and Baltic mixed forests.
食性
The raven feeds on a wide variety of food, consuming carrion, catching small animals, collecting insects, berries, and seeds. The method of obtaining food involves searching for feed on the ground, using its beak to tear food apart, and occasionally hunting. Its diet consists of carrion, rodents, insects, berries, seeds, eggs of other birds, eggs, coniferous cones, and seed. The feeding strategy includes active hunting, searching for, and acquiring food. The daily food requirement ranges from 150 g to 350 g. Food at the "Chick" stage consists of invertebrates, including beetles, butterflies, diptera, hymenoptera, bedbugs, orthoptera, dragonfly, mayfly, net-winged insects, decapods, ribbon worms, and sucking worms.
繁殖
The development of the embryo occurs from 2 weeks and 4 days to 2 weeks and 5 days. Common ravens form pairs for life, and the female lays eggs in a large nest. The clutch size is 3 to 7 young, with both parents guarding the nest and feeding the offspring. The species reproduces every 1 year, and the young reach maturity from 2 to 4 years of age. A raven’s brood consists of 3 to 7 offspring.
