Eurasian elk and North American elk inhabit terrestrial landscapes including highlands, tundra, and forests; the species’ elevation range extends up to 2 kilometers above sea level. They are found in taiga biomes characterized by cold winters and an abundance of coniferous trees such as spruce and pine, flooded meadows with plentiful grass where water frequently inundates the ground, and temperate mixed forests featuring oak, birch, and maple trees. The climate varies, with cool summers averaging between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius, frequent rainfall creating consistently humid conditions, and winters marked by heavy snowfall and cold temperatures; some areas experience warm summers alongside abundant rainfall and winter snow.
