Mongolian horse — a small, hardy primitive breed of steppe type. Height at withers 122–138 cm (stallions 130–135 cm, mares 125–132 cm), live weight 240–360 kg (average 270–320 kg). Body length 140–155 cm, chest girth 150–175 cm. Build compact, “square” (format index ≈1.00–1.05), with a short broad head, short thick neck, deep broad body, short straight back, powerful croup and strong limbs. Distinguished by extremely dense winter coat (up to 80–100 mm), ability to accumulate fat on the croup and sides (“fat hump”), very strong rounded hooves. All coat colors are allowed; most common are bay, brown, dun, mouse-gray, chestnut, black, gray; primitive markings (dark dorsal stripe, zebra striping) are characteristic.
