Bhutia horse
Calm, hardy, self-confident. Well adapted to harsh mountain conditions, possesses a strong self-preservation instinct, rarely shows timidity. High sociability in the herd, loyal to humans, but independent.
Bhutia — a compact, strongly built mountain pony of square format (body length ≈ height at withers), with powerful bone structure, high massiveness and well-developed musculature. Height at withers 1100–1300 mm (ideal 1150–1250 mm). Live weight 180000–280000 g. Chest depth ≥ 55–58 % of height at withers, chest girth 1400–1650 mm, cannon bone girth 160–190 mm. Head relatively large and broad (forehead width ≥ 180–190 mm), with straight or slightly concave profile. Shorter limbs, wide barrel-shaped body, large head and exceptionally thick long winter coat compared to other Asian ponies and the base species. Almost all solid colors are allowed (predominantly bay, black, brown, mouse dun, dun, buckskin), often with primitive markings (dorsal stripe, zebra striping). Not allowed: piebald, leopard spotting, height outside 1050–1350 mm, weak bone structure, narrow chest, weak hooves.
