Lac La Croix Indian Pony
Calm, friendly, loyal, highly developed instinct for working with humans, hardy, stress-resistant, possesses strong herd instinct and natural caution.
Lac La Croix Indian Pony — compact, sturdy, hardy primitive breed of Canadian Indian forest-type pony. Height at withers 1300–1450 mm (ideal 1350–1420 mm), weight 360000–500000 g (usually 380000–450000 g). Square format, wide and deep body, strong bone structure, well-developed musculature. Head relatively large (480–560 mm), with broad forehead, straight or slightly concave profile, sometimes slight roman nose. Ears small, erect, triangular (110–140 mm). Eyes large, widely set, dark brown or black, often with visible white sclera (“Indian eye”). Nose straight or slightly convex, nostrils large (45–55 mm wide). Vibrissae long (80–100 mm), black or dark gray. Neck of medium length (550–680 mm), muscular. Body compact, back short and strong (520–610 mm), chest girth 1600–1850 mm. Limbs strong, pastern girth 170–200 mm, hooves round, very strong, often with tiger striping. Tail low-set, often “rat tail”. Coat dense, double, winter length 60–80 mm. Almost exclusively spotted coat (tobiano predominates, overo less common) with white markings on the head, marbled lips, striped hooves and white sclera. Differs from the domestic horse by smaller stature, compact build, primitive traits (dense undercoat, striped hooves, rat tail, white sclera), resistance to climate and insects. Ideal proportions: body length ≈ height at withers, chest depth 55–58 % of height, head ≈ 1/3 height. Not allowed: height outside 1270–1480 mm, solid coat, weak bone structure, long back, absence of undercoat.
