Monchino
Calm, balanced, obedient, with a pronounced self-preservation instinct. Well adapted to mountain conditions, hardy, possesses a strong nervous system. Less energetic than many sport breeds, prefers a measured pace of work.
Monchino — a primitive ancient Iberian breed of mountain horses from Cantabria (Spain). Small, strong, hardy, of brachyomorphic (short-legged, broad-bodied) type of constitution, with a compact square body format, powerful bone structure and high massiveness. Height at withers 1300–1480 mm (ideal 1350–1420 mm), weight 300–420 kg, body length 1450–1650 mm. Head relatively large (480–560 mm), profile straight or slightly concave. Neck short and powerful (480–580 mm). Limbs short with very strong bone (pastern girth 170–195 mm). Hooves strong, round, dark-horn to black color. Coat very dense with dense winter undercoat. Allowed colors: only black (Negra, dominant) and bay (Castaña, from light red to dark chestnut). Any white markings, roan, pinto, dun, cream dilutions are prohibited. Differs from the basic species and other breeds (Pottoka, PRE) by a more primitive phenotype, short neck, square format, high massiveness index (>1.25) and dense coat.
