Calm, balanced, obedient, with a pronounced desire to work. Loyal to humans, self-confident, not prone to panic. Performs well in harness and under saddle, possesses a strong instinct for energy conservation.
Nonius is a large, massive, harmoniously built horse of draft and combined type. One of the largest Hungarian breeds. Height at withers: stallions 1580–1680 mm (average 1620–1640 mm), mares 1550–1640 mm (average 1580–1600 mm). Weight: stallions 580000–680000 g, mares 520000–620000 g. Body length 1650–1780 mm, chest girth 1900–2100 mm, pastern girth 220–250 mm. Format index (body length / height at withers) ≈ 1.04–1.08. Chest depth ≥50–52 % of height at withers. Head comprises approximately 40–42 % of height at withers. Main color — black (including in tan), bay and chestnut are allowed. Differs from the base type by pronounced draft conformation, “Roman” head profile, powerful high neck, massive deep body, high neck set, thick coarse coat and very strong hooves. There are two lines: Nonius Senior (larger, more massive, distinctly draft with Roman profile) and Nonius Junior (lighter, drier, with better riding qualities). Disallowed faults: deer head, pike profile, chicken breast, sway back, sickle hocks, calf knees, fine bone, weak hooves, swan neck, low neck set.
Indicates a long-lasting or recurring health condition.
Legendary longevity: over 100 years. Galapagos tortoises, Greenland sharks, ocean quahogs celebrate with family once every 4 years
